Is there any better way to spend a Sunday than at a coffee shop for a few hours? Let me just answer that for you, NO. There is absolutely not, especially when the coffee shop you are going to is in the Ace Hotel!
Stumptown Coffee, the notorious canned cold brew coffee, opened a cafe in the Ace Hotel and it is gorgeous! It is also right across the street from the new Google “campus” in Chicago, so this is quite the tech and up-incoming area right now. There have been a plethora of new restaurants and bars open in this area. I was really looking forward to not only trying Stumptown’s new coffee shop, but wondering around the new neighborhood.
So we took a Sunday drive over to the Fulton District on a dreary winter Sunday morning.
Pulling up to the hotel we were lucky enough to score rockstar parking right across the street! #winning AND the coffee shop was wide open, it was amazing! This blows my mind a little only because if you go a few blocks over to the West Loop neighborhood there will already be lines outside of all the bars and restaurants. It’s quite the popping area so I was thrilled to see that this coffee shop hasn’t quite made its public debut just yet.
Stumptown is floor to ceiling windows, so plenty of light for their plants sprinkled down the window counter and on the community table in the middle of the space. Very simple, clean and modern design. Very fitting for the rest of the hotel’s decor.
Menu is simple and straightforward, no frills or serious thrills and that wouldn’t be needed her because their coffee and espresso alone have great flavor that’s all you need to come here. We ordered a double cortado and their brown sugar latte with a third shot of espresso.
We have become espresso addicts, it might hurt our hearts down the road but for now they are still kicking it.
While waiting for our drinks we plopped down at the communite table, Danny was admiring the wood work while I was checking out their plants. FYI some of them are fake, I wont judge too much, easier to care for that way. Drinks done and they were just what we needed that morning a warm cozy pick me up.
The brown sugar latte was surprisingly not too sweet, it had the perfect mix with the steamed milk and espresso, I think I would recommend always adding in that extra shot of espresso unless you are looking for a sweeter dessert like beverage. My double cortado was PERFECT! Not too much milk and the espresso had a great rich nutty flavor. I prefer a nuttier espresso over a rich chocolate flavor. Mixes better with the milk and with my being a nut head it would only be natural that I prefer a nuttier coffee/espresso.
Nuts run through my veins I eat them so much, that and coffee are what get me going all day.
After we enjoyed our drinks we took the time to explore the rest of the Ace Hotel, the lobby has a very trendy restaurant called City Mouse, surprised how open it was this morning but it has a jaw dropping beautiful patio that I have heard gets quite packing in the summer. I can see why it’s gorgeous and there are firepits to keep cozy near. Previously mentioned Google is across the street along with two newcomers, Regards to Edith and Prairie School and on the corner is Swift and Sons, a long time Fulton District restaurant. So they are not among bad company out there.
This will be the “hot spot” come this summer when people can walk around outside and bop in and out of all these bars and restaurants, today it was like a sleepy ghost town and I loved it! I will absolutely be back for more Stumptown! They are in close rival with HalfWit coffee for my favorite in Chicago right now.
