Starbucks Blonde

I think I might be the lamest “BLONDE” Bean Head ever, it has taken me much too long to actually make it to a Starbucks in order to try their new blonde espresso! So now, months past the hype here I am sharing my first experience trying the new espresso and knowledge I was able to collect on it.

First and foremost let’s start by congratulating Starbucks on releasing their first new espresso in 40 years! A job well done and hype well received by the public. It was all the talk in the office leading up to the release, we have a Starbucks in our lobby so it basically fuels everyone in our company. A casual 800+ folks! The fact that a Starbucks is even in my building lobby and it still has taken me months to try the blonde espresso makes me even more sad, but better late than never.  

Leading up to my visit I was obviously able to do my do-diligence in research and read copious amounts of reviews online to see what others had to say about the new espresso. 

Basically, blonde espresso is not a “new” things, it has been around but more commonly called a cinnamon roast. Blonde and light and cinnamon all refer to a lighter roasting profile for the bean. All interchangeable, Starbucks just marketed it right and played into blondes having more fun. 😉 

(if you ask this blonde, they do!)  

What does this lighter roast mean though and why call it BLONDE!? So the lighter roast naturally is referring to the beans roast time. Lighter coffee roasts are roasted for a shorter period of time and at a lower temperature, 205 degrees celsius is the sweet spot for getting a bean flavor higher in acidity. Lighter roast are known for being more floral, bright and acidic than they dark rich, nutty/chocolate counter parts. The bean in physical appearance is a lighter/golden brown shade. So the lighter rosat became the blonde sister to the brunette dark roast.

Another interesting fact about blonde roasts is they are rumored to have more caffeine, or have a different effect on the body, but none of this is true. The light roasts have the same amount of caffeine as the dark roasts, just different flavor. So there is no caffeine benefit to drinking one over the other, it’s all a taste preference  

Time to taste this blonde sister! This morning I was really needing a pick me up so I went with a tall latte with TWO shots, I was also figuring this would be a good way to really bring out the smooth blonde espresso flavor. Also there is no way I would pay just for an espresso shot from Starbucks! The would be highway robbery for a mediocre shot a latte was going to have to fit the bill.

The verdict…….

Blonde espresso is NOT for this blonde bean head. My latte was what I expected from a Starbucks latte, just to be OKAY. I just have a hard time paying for it when I know there are SO many other better coffee shots out there, but considering there is a Starbucks on every block in the city it’s hard to ignore or avoid. Latte not the best I have had but even the espresso was just okay, not a strong flavor and really struggled to taste the espresso at all. I personally love a very strong espresso with a rich nutty flavor so I already knew it would be interesting to see what I thought of the blonde roast. I like to have my socks off with a strong espresso flavor and the blonde was just too like for my liking.

Would I give it another try? Yes, but probably in a different drink or over ice in the summer!
