Welp folks, I say it quite a bit iI know, but I think I have found my new favorite coffee shop! Electric Mud!
It’ new as of 2019 and is a Dark Matter Coffee shop, with that I was already slightly prepared to be blow away by the art. But this whole cafe in general just knocked my socks off! I already want to go back, it’s not in the most convenient location, just off the Western blue line stop, but worth the trip for sure. We of course drove, maximize our time.
We parked around the corner from the cafe and walked over to it. Electric Mud might be the smallest of Dark Matters cafes in Chicago, certainly the smallest one I have been to, the front of the cafe could almost be missed completely if you were not looking for it. Of course this adorable cactus sign stopped me!
Entering the cafe I was literally blow away, there is NOT a lot of seating in this cafe, don’t plan to come in and think you will have a table right away or even at all for that matter. There are two small tables in the front window, next to them is a mini stage though! They have this all set up for clearly live music, not a band size, but someone with their guitar could sit on stool and play!
How fun and unique for a coffee shop to have a space for live music like that. I love! Along the wall on the right side there is a huge bench that can fit a ton of butts, there is just no tables so clearly this is mostly meant for people to sit and be out of the way while they wait for their coffee drinks. Respect, cause I could see this getting crowded during peak hours.
To order your drink you have to walk straight back and slightly curve a little to get to the counter were the most friendly and welcoming baristas are ready to take your order. It took me awhile to decide what I wanted to get, I really love Dark Matters espresso, I have purchase it before and clearly form having their drinks in the past I slightly knew what to expect.
Today at Electric Mud they were offering this new specialty drink that I have never seen before. It was a mayan mocha and it sounded so delicious, I just can’t do mocha drinks, for whatever reason I am not a fan at all of mocha in my coffee. BUT I will eat handfuls and handfuls of dark chocolate covered espresso beans. (can’t explain this).
So Danny order his very standard cappuccino and I actually at the last minute saw that there was s kid menu that offered a honey and cinnamon drink! I asked if I could have this with the espresso added of course, the barista said this was actually her go to drink! How perfect, it must be good then. I was excited!
While waiting for our drinks Danny took a seat on the mega bench, even though there was no line he was just getting out of the way, clearly as I paraded around talking bunch of pictures. I was taking in all the art, atmosphere and PLANTS! This cafe was cluttered in the most wonderful way possibly with plants. I was also obsessing over the edison light bulbs too, they were mega huge. This is such a cool cafe with such a welcoming friendly vibe. I was digging everything about it this morning. There is also a special here that purchase a pour over coffee, get 3 mini donuts free! How awesome is that, if I was planning to sit here for a bit I would be all over that deal. I saw the size of the donuts and they truly are mini. Comparable to a munchkin size from Dunkin.
Once our coffees were ready we actually sat and enjoyed a few sips there on the bench before running out the door. We both were enjoying the decorations and plants so much I think we both could have sat there all morning. I just wish there were more tables, but I absolutely plan to come back on a day there is live music. That would be so much fun to have a coffee and listen to someone playing the guitar!
Oh I almost forgot this latte was to die for, of course the espresso flavor was strong and delicious, but the subtle hint of honey and cinnamon were perfect! My new favorite touch!
Has anyone else been to Electric Mud? I believe there is one other location in the Loop, Meddle Cafe, that I still need to ge to for Dark Matter.
