Is there a better way to spend the day off than drinking coffee and eating biscuits? I think not. The folks at Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits might argue I need pie with the biscuit though.
First off, why do I have a random Monday off you ask? Well one, the end of the year came much faster than I thought so I now have random days off sprinked in each week till the end of the year. But two, my family wento the Bears game together the other weekend and so I felt I needed today to recover from a day filled with loud football fans, beer and more beer. I just cannot recover like I use to after a day of drinking, I am also not a big drinker so my tolerance is extremely low.
We did the Bears game as a family this year instead of buying each other gifts, which honestly I was a big advocate for because I am literally the WORST at picking christmas gifts out. I struggle every single year and I’ll always wait till the last minute too, so dumb of me but yes I’ll wait and then get angry and flustered when christmas is in a week and I have no shopping done. No one to blame but myself for all this, I hate to admit but I am kind of like the grinch around this time of year. Yuck, even just writing that puts a bad taste in my mouth, but really I just don’t care for this holiday. I love the family time and everyone being together and having fun but all the gift giving and expectations around the holiday in general have my going bald. So yes, when my family proposed an outing with quality family time together I jumped all over that, we are all at the point in life where if we want something we are adults and will go out and get it. So christmas gifts for the past few years turned into us telling each other exactly what we wanted or sending links to literally that exact item. For my family that just is so wrong. Its suppose to be a surprise and a thoughtful gift no picking and item from a list! At least that is how we were raised.
Danny LOVES christmas too, it’s literally his favorite time of the year so I need to knock my grinch attitude!
Since we both took the day off I figured what better way to celebrate the holiday then going out for some delicious coffee and biscuits, this place is known to always have a line so going on a random Monday is possibly the only way to do it .
Walking into the shop I immediately learned why there is ALWAYS a line here, just enough room to talk in and bump right into the ordering counter. Three tables along the window and then a total of 10 bar seats along the order counter and far wall. Yikes, it was tight in there, but os so cozy and on a cool day like today I didn’t mind on bit cause there was enough seats for us! The gentleman taking the orders was the most friendly talkative person I have ever encountered at 10am on a Monday, usually people don’t quite have the energy for all the talk on Monday. Well aside from myself, I could talk to a stain on a wall all day long. Motter mouth Sarah here. So we chatted a bit about the pies, which were his favorite, stores best, seasonal and then the biscuits that he enjoyed best. After getting the full lowdown on the menu we started with two breakfast items, a biscuit and egg and their biscuits and gravy dish. Danny and I needed more time to decide on pies.
Of course I will not forget we ordered a cup of delicious coffee too, they were roasting organic fairtrade beans from South America today. Coffee wasn’t the best I have ever had but it was far from the worst too. You cannot eat breakfast food without coffee, that would be a crime. I also can’t imagine anything better to help wash down a dry biscuit than coffee! Can you?
While waiting for our breakfast I took some time to walk out back and check out the back patio, now this is where people come to sit. If it were nicer weather I would be doing the same! Just check this out, they have a whole city lot back here with just grass and picnic tables! How cute and awesome, I will come back to enjoy some pie back here in the summer. I can probably bring the pup then too.
Once breakfast came out I succeed back inside to make sure I got to my food while it was still hot! These biscuits are hands down the best I have ever had! The gooey egg on top hit the spot too, needed to help with the dry crumbs. The flavor was divine; dry, flakey, but the inside was warm and moist, you could flake it apart and then stick all the inside crumbs together to make in glorious crumb. It had the perfect biscuit flavor where it was savory and simple buttery flavor.
I should add that with the biscuits they always put a side a house made strawberry jelly, for those looking to have the biscuit with something sweet. This jelly with the biscuit was just what I needed after finishing my egg, I still had half a biscuit left and adding the jelly covered the butter flavor and gave it a sweet fresh strawberry flavor, delicious. I need to try and replicate at home now.
After just describing this to you I could go for another right about now. HA! Danny ordered the biscuits and gravy and oh my goodness was this the way to go, the gravy was to die for and the sausage they used gave it a good spice and a heat that built with every bite. The biscuit soaked it up and made for the perfect gutt warming breakfast.
While sipping our coffee and enjoying our delicious breakfast it was pie decision time. Neither of us had room for pie right now, those biscuits were filling and huge. So we needed to decide on a pie to bring home for later, no way were we making it all the way out here and not trying pie too.
We landed on one of the seasonal options; cherry and toasted pecan pie crumble. – Right? How delicious does that sound! I can 100% confirm this was an amazing slice of pie!! If I was better at baking I would try and do this myself but going here for a slice to meeting cravings will have to do cause this was so delicious. I am a huge sucker for key lime pie, this is a staple on their menu that I will be back to try next!
What is your favorite flavor pie? Are there other good pie shops in the city I should plan to visit next?
