Backlot Coffee

Another Sunday, another grocery/coffee run! This time we are hitting up a cafe for the second time, Backlot Coffee in Avondale

Danny really enjoys going to the Ravenswood Marianos, personally not sure why, but I figured we can take a trip back up there and then grab some coffee on our way back! Duhh!

I discovered this weekend that I have a very poor understanding of distance in the city, when looking on a map and saying it would take about 25 minutes and just shy of four miles from Marianos I figured we were golden. This would be sure a “side step” on our way home, but all the same along the route home. FALSE! I could not be more wrong, it was quite a hike out to Avondale from Ravenswood. I think all the lights made it feel extra long? Not sure but when we got there all I wanted was coffee and all Danny wanted/needed was food.

Due to Covid coffee shops are all kinds of a gamble, you never really know what new rules each one will have implemented. It’s never an issue for us but always something new we experience with each cafe. So for Backlot they are only allowing 4 people in the cafe at a time, the line, if longer than four people will be outside the building. They have removed all chairs and tables, blocked off the second entereane so there is only one way in and out and naturally everything is served to go.

We learned the person rule in an awkward way where one gentleman exited and Danny and I both thought we could sneak in, nope. The barista kindly asked one of us to leave. In a pure panic, having not looked at the menu we both jumped out of the way and allowed the woman behind us to go in while we collected ourselves. It was pretty comical, but she was extremely appreciative!

Once we got our orders together I went into the cafe to place the order and wait. I went with the Oatmeal Cookie latte, which was oat milk with honey and cinnamon, basically as of late my all time favorite drink! Danny was planning to get the honey and cinnamon cortado or the seasonal, dependent he said on what the seasonal was. It oddly enough happened to be honey, vanilla and nutmeg, so I went with that latte for him.

The cafe kepes order and people move quickly, I remember from our first visit that the drink orders took a little more time. We were in and out in no time! We both enjoyed the lattes but agreed they are lightly using a medium blend for their espresso, there was something about it we were personally not liking too much. I would probably recommend getting their coffee actually, I bet that would be amazing.

Well third times the charm right? So I’ll be getting coffee the next time I wander out to Avondale.
